Our Belfast adventure was planned with a mix of history, luxury and a touch of fantasy. From exploring the Titanic Belfast to stepping into the world of Game of Thrones, this road trip had something for everyone in the family.
Our first stop was Titanic Belfast and navigating Belfast’s traffic felt just like the M50 – bumper-to-bumper with cars. When we reached Titanic Belfast, thankfully there was plenty of parking near the docks, all within walking distance and there is also underground parking onsite. The striking building pays tribute to Belfast’s shipbuilding heritage, its sharp, angular design representing the prows of ships, with the main ‘prow’ perfectly aligned with the Titanic and Olympic slipways, pointing toward the River Lagan.
Inside is even more impressive. After purchasing tickets, we started our journey over four levels, learning all about the Titanic history. It’s a treasure trove of memorabilia and facts, immersing visitors in the gruelling work of Belfast’s shipyards. We took a three minute, fascinating ‘Shipyard Ride’ which takes you through the sights and deafening sounds of construction, highlighting the backbreaking labour that left many workers with lasting health issues.
Further along the tour, the mood shifted. Dim lighting and haunting music set a sombre tone as we entered the memorial section. A small floating replica of the Titanic is in the centre, surrounded by stories of the victims of that fateful night, projected on the surrounding walls. The room is filled with genuine artifacts, including an original deck chair, a poignant reminder of the tragedy.
As you descend, the final floor offers fascinating historical exhibits and a fun photo opportunity to recreate the iconic scene from the 1997 movie ‘Titanic’ with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. Your ticket also includes access to the SS Nomadic, the last remaining ship from the prestigious White Star Line fleet, docked just across from Titanic Belfast. This visitor attraction is both a tribute and a powerful experience, bringing Titanic’s story to life.
Just 13 minutes away in the charming town of Holywood, we arrive at the luxurious Culloden Estate and Spa. The grand driveway sets the tone for something truly special, leading to the hotel’s majestic frontage, which greets you in seconds. Perched high on the Holywood Hills – not the LA ones, but those overlooking Belfast Lough and the Antrim coastline – the setting is simply breathtaking.
Stepping into the reception, the outside world fades away and a sense of calm takes over. It’s the kind of place where you could curl up by the fire, slip off your shoes and drift into a cosy afternoon nap. Rich in history, the Culloden was originally built in 1876 as the official residence for the Bishops of Down and its elegant décor reflects that heritage beautifully. Many rooms have breathtaking views of the beautifully landscaped gardens and Belfast Lough, perfect for relaxing while gazing out from your window. Each room and suite is uniquely decorated, offering a peaceful and cosy retreat.
We stayed in the spacious Bishops Suite, a family option with an adjoining room that comfortably sleeps 5-6 people. Ideal for larger families or trips with grandparents, these suites provide plenty of space to unwind. They are also an option for sharing with a friend and their children – splitting the cost while making unforgettable memories together in a luxury setting.
The leisure centre offers top-class spa facilities and the soothing scent of ESPA products fills the entire hotel. From body wash to hand soap and lotion, I made sure the twins left smelling like an ESPA product. The spacious sauna and jacuzzi have stunning views over the Lough, adding to the relaxation. The indoor pool is a highlight, though children have designated swim times to maintain the tranquil spa atmosphere for adults.
The Culloden Estate has been undergoing upgrades, with more to come. GM Cormac Fadden shares that the ground floor has been re-carpeted and repainted, maintaining the hotel’s signature opulent feel. The rich, cascading curtains, antique furniture and perfectly placed cushions on high-back armchairs create an inviting space to sink into and unwind – which I did.
Dining is a highlight here. Vespers Restaurant offers modern Irish cuisine crafted from fresh, locally sourced ingredients for a fine dining experience. For a more laid-back meal, the Cultra Inn provides a cosy setting with a mix of hearty dishes and light bites, all within the estate’s stunning grounds. And for those looking to sip in style, the Lough Bar is the perfect spot for afternoon tea or an evening cocktail with a breathtaking view.
For more family fun, you can visit the Ulster Folk & Transport Museum, Bangor Aurora Aquatic Centre, W5 Interactive Discovery Centre, Seapark in Holywood or relax at Helen’s Bay beach. Cultra train station, behind the hotel, offers quick trips to Belfast (16 mins) or Bangor (12 mins) with scenic coastal walking paths nearby.
On our way back to Dublin, we made a stop in Banbridge for the Game of Thrones Studio Tour. After parking at the ticket shop, we hopped on a 20-minute shuttle to the studio. The massive studio is impressive, with two cafés and even a GOT-themed afternoon tea – an unforgettable treat. As we explored the actual sets from iconic episodes, I got completely lost in the magic while the twins enjoyed the interactive activities. Their favourite? The Hall of Faces, where they eagerly added their own photos multiple times. The grand finale, of course, was the legendary Iron Throne, where I sat, soaked in the epic memories and relived the series’ most unforgettable moments. Before leaving, we took plenty of photos – including one of me, fully cloaked, claiming my rightful place on the throne!
This tour and the Titanic Belfast is only a small piece of what Belfast offers families and visitors. If you want a unique, luxurious family experience make sure to include an overnight stay at the Culloden Estate and Spa – you may not want to leave.
